Son Graduated College in May 2023 and Now Working Full Time Living at Home

Hello,

My son graduated College in May 2023 and started working full time in July 2023. He is living with us at home and is 23 years old. Is he still a dependent child?

Thank you

It depends, Turbo Tax will take you step by step in deciding whether your son can qualify as your dependent for 2023.   A possible disqualification could be if he provided more than half of his own support.  To learn more take a look at the following link:

Additionally, to be considered a "student " for the dependency requirements, the IRS states:

" To qualify as a student, your child must be, during some part of each of any 5 calendar months of the year:

  1. A full-time student at a school that has a regular teaching staff and course of study, and a regularly enrolled student body at the school; or
  2. A student taking a full-time, on-farm training course given by a school described in (1), or by a state, county, or local government agency.

The 5 calendar months don't have to be consecutive."

If the student attended classes any part of January through May, they would fulfill this requirement.

The other requirements must also be met such as the support test as mentioned earlier.
