My son did his taxes himself for the first time; however he claimed himself as a dependent. When I filed yesterday my taxes were rejected since I claimed him. He is in the process of filing an amendement. My question is do I need to wait to file my taxes until his amendement is processed? What happens if it goes beyond the filing date , will I get penalized for not filing in time.
Thanks

I would call the IRS to speak with them. They usually have a hotline that you can call. If you don't file your taxes on time they will penalize you but you could put yourself on extension to give yourself until 10/15/2019. You could always file your taxes without claiming him as a dependent and then amend the return once his form goes through.
You need to file your return by mail. You don't have to wait for your son's amended return to be processed. The IRS will eventually sort out that your son can't claim himself as a dependent, but that adjustment won't hit their system for some time. The IRS will keep rejecting your return if you try to file electronically.
