Solar Tax Credit

I'm not sure if/how I can apply my solar tax credit to my taxes this year?  Not sure I'm even eligible given my tax situation?

Our financial situation is only W2 income and paying property mortgage interests, maybe unemployment. Pretty simple finances.

Thanks

Greg

Solar Tax Credit

To be eligible for the credit:

  •  Your solar PV system was ‘placed in service’ between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2021.
  • The solar PV system is located at a residential location in the U.S. (but not necessarily your primary residence).
  • You own the solar PV system ( e.g., you purchased it with cash or through financing)
  • The solar PV system is new or being used for the first time.

Also, the solar credit is a non refundable credit. A non-refundable tax credit can only reduce a taxpayer's liability to zero. It can't be used to increase your tax refund or to create a tax refund when you wouldn't have already had one.

To claim the credit :

  1. Open or continue your return, if you don't already have it open.
  2. In TurboTax, search for Energy improvements
  3. Click the Jump to link in the search results.
  4. At the bottom of the Energy-Saving Home Improvements screen, answer Yes and continue. Follow the instructions.
