Not everyone gets a tax refund. If your tax liability is greater than your tax payments you will have taxes owed. Look at your federal tax return, Form 1040. Your total tax is on Line 24. Your total tax payments/credits is on Line 33.
If you made a mistake on the 2021 tax return that was filed then you will need to amend the 2021 tax return.
See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a 2021 tax return originally completed and filed using TurboTax - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-2021-return/L1gEU4G3X_U...
As stated, not everyone gets a refund, especially if you have no dependents (or are a dependent yourself). Some folks even owe at tax time. Ideally, you should break even. Otherwise, you are giving the government an interest free loan all year.
@SweetieJean -- even if no dependents, if your income is low enough, you are still eligible for EITC, so you may get a refund even if there are no federal withholding on a W-2.
No one can see your screen, your tax return or your account. So we do not have any way to know if you did your tax return "right." As stated already, not everyone gets a tax refund. You get a refund if you had more tax withheld from your paycheck than you owed to the government, or if you are eligible for refundable credits like earned income credit and several other possible credits. Or...if you were eligible for the 3rd stimulus in the form of the recovery rebate credit. Did you already receive that $1400 stimulus last year? Was there an amount on line 30 of your 2021 tax return?
You say this is the first time "using it" --- do you mean this is the first time you have ever prepared a tax return? Is this tax return for the first job you have ever had? How old are you? How much did you earn? Did you enter a W-2? Without any of your personal information like SSN, email, phone number etc., provide us with some details about the income you entered and your filing status, etc. to see if we can be more helpful. Also.....did you already e-file?
Are you talking about TurboTax giving you a result from preparing your taxes,
OR about IRS telling you your refund is being denied (due to miscalculation or other error) ?
