Should i claim my 21 year old who took a year of break and made 30,000? or will he have to pay taxes when he files?

my son took break from school and made 30,000 if i claim him will he have to pay taxes when he files? if he wants to go back to school this year should i claim him for better financial aid option?

Unfortunately, you can't claim him.  If he was not a full-time student (at least 5 months of the year), he is not your qualifying child because of his age (he is over 19).  Even if he were in school, it might be difficult to say that he didn't provide at least half of his own support with that kind of income.  Please see this link with more information:  Qualifying Child Rules

The other consequences (FAFSA, for instance), will be what they will be. But legally you will not be able to claim him, he must file an independent return.

Unfortunately, you can't claim him.  If he was not a full-time student (at least 5 months of the year), he is not your qualifying child because of his age (he is over 19).  Even if he were in school, it might be difficult to say that he didn't provide at least half of his own support with that kind of income.  Please see this link with more information:  Qualifying Child Rules
