Separated from spouse from Jan 15, 2016 to Present. How to file and claim exceptions (children).
Your filing choices are MFJ, MFS, or HOH (Head of Household).
You can file HOH if you and your husband did not live together at any time in the last 6 months of 2016, and you paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for yourself and a dependent child.
You can claim the children as dependents if you are the custodial parent. The custodial parent is the parent with whom the children spent the greater number of nights in 2016.
