Schedule A, line 5a: General Sales Tax option. Is Turbo Tax going to give us the option before April 15 to check this box? Or do I have to mail the return in?
State tax refunds will be taxable if we "itemize" them this year. With property tax and sales taxes I hit the $10,000 limit without claiming state income tax.

The 10K limit applies only to the state and local income tax deduction. And for that specific deduction (line 5a), you can choose either:
- sales tax OR
- state and local taxes (the 10K limit only applies to this deduction).
Choose the one the is the highest amount. You can still deduct mortgage interest, medical, charity donations, etc. in addition to the Sales Tax or Income Tax deduction.
