If you are referring the 5 digit pin for e-filing the 2021 tax return you can use any 5 digit number.  You must however enter the correct 2020 AGI so the return can be e-filed and accepted by the IRS.

The 2020 AGI is on your 2020 federal tax return Form 1040 Line 11.

If you have entered the correct 2020 AGI and the IRS continues to reject the return then the IRS probably does not have your 2020 AGI in their database.  Enter a 0 (zero) for the 2020 AGI and e-file the 2021 tax return again.

If you are referring to the 6 digit IP PIN you received from the IRS that is entered in the TurboTax program in the Other Tax Situations section.  You must use the IP PIN sent to you for the 2021 tax return which you should have received from the IRS in the mail in January 2022 or December 2021.

If you are required to use the IP PIN and did not receive the PIN from the IRS go to this IRS website to retrieve the IP PIN - https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/retrieve-your-ip-pin

To enter, edit or delete a 6 digit IP PIN

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Other Tax Situations
  • Scroll down to Other Return Info
  • On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

Or enter ip pin in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ip pin

I am referring to the IP pin that the irs gives you, I didn’t have it so I used the tool to obtain one. I’ve entered it numerous times it keeps being rejected. I didn’t file last year so I can try and put 0 for the AGI but nevertheless the rejection code says my IP Pin doesn’t match but it’s the one I literally received this morning from the IRS.

it doesn’t say anything about my AGI as I selected the option of ‘I did not file’ for the previous year

If the rejection is specifically for the 6 digit IP PIN and you received the PIN from the IRS website for retrieving the PIN and the IRS continues to reject the return for the IP PIN then your only option is to print and mail the tax return.

When mailing the tax return use a tracking service from the US Post Office so that you will have proof the return was received by the IRS.

The IRS is taking 6 months and longer to process mailed tax returns.

If you just got one issued today I would wait a few days and try efiling again ... the IRS machine works very slowly.
