Retired as of January 13, 2013?

My husband was on employer-insurance medical-disability eff Jun 2012, and has never returned to paid employment.   My state return (Michigan) is asking "Retired as of January 13, 2013?" How should I answer this - yes / no?   What are the resulting actions, by the state, for answering either way?
