My rejection says to review the "description field" to identify which dependent is causing the rejection. Where do I find the "description field"? I can't find it.

Did you claim more than one dependent? Look carefully at the rejection notice----there will be a "01" "02" etc in the notice. Then look at the dependents as shown on your Form 1040. 01 is the first name, 02 is the 2nd one, etc. etc. That way you will know which dependent's SSN was used already on a return. Do you have any teenagers or students who may have filed their own tax return and did not say they could be claimed as dependent?

But where is the description field for me to see the number of the dependent causing the problem. I don't see the description field. The notice says to review the description field.
Your dependents are shown on your tax return. The one on the top line of dependents is 1. Next one is 2, and so on. Or-----as I mentioned ----do you have any teenagers or students who filed a tax return of their own? Do you have a child who had any sort of job? ASK them if they filed a tax return and then find out if they made the VERY common error of saying no one can claim them as a dependent.
Your other remedy for this is to simply file your tax return by mail and have the IRS sort out the duplicate use of the SSN.
Its very possible my ex filed and claimed one or both of my children. But I still do not see where I find out by the description which dependent is the duplicate.
As @xmasbaby0 stated, the rejection notice should indicate which dependent was claimed on another return by number - i.e. the numerical order that dependent appears on your return. The first dependent is labeled 01, etc.
If you are certain that you are the one who qualifies to claim both dependents, the other parent won't tell you whether they claimed them, and your dependents didn't file and claim themselves, you can file your return by mail. The IRS will select both returns for examination and ask for information to establish which taxpayer is entitled to claim the dependents.
After a return claiming a particular dependent is accepted, any subsequent return that is electronically filed claiming the dependent will be rejected by the IRS.
See this TurboTax article for more information on duplicated dependents and this one on how to remove a dependent.
Depending on your income and your tax liability, removing dependents may not make as much of a difference to your refund or balance due as you expected. You can preview your return before filing to find out how your taxes were calculated and to view the forms and schedules. See here for details.
Would the rejection code be IND-507-01? And would the affected dependent be number 1 on my tax return? The email I was sent states "Your federal tax return was rejected", then below it states "What happened" and this is what I was sent: IND-507-01 - 'Dependent SSN on a previously accepted return for the same tax period. Etc.
Can you help me please. Thank you.
Code IND-507-01 means that a Social Security Number on your return has been used by someone else.
the 01 may refer to the first listed on your return.
How do I fix e-file reject IND-517-01?
