Received my first disability check in January 2017 does that go on 2016 or 2017

I was approved, no back pay but want to make sure  I file correctly.  Was money paid in January 2017 go on my taxes and what year

If the check was dated in January 2017 (or directly deposited to your account in January), it would be taxable in 2017 and not reported on your 2016 return.
