Received 2 W2s for the same company but two different states. Employer originally mis-coded me in our system as a MA employee instead of an OH employee. What do I do?

I work in OH but a branch of our company is in MA. HR made an error when I was hired and listed me as a MA employee, so I was taxed as a MA employee until I noticed it a month or two later. This was then fixed in our internal system. But, now I have two W2s, one for OH and one for MA even though I have never worked or lived in MA, how do I handle?

You will have to file a non-resident tax return for MA, showing zero MA income, in order to receive a refund of the incorrectly withheld MA taxes.

But, will I then technically owe taxes to OH for the duration of the time I was being taxed as MA employee and not OH? I just want to clarify I wasn’t being taxed by both states at the same time, just initially MA, then I had HR fix this in the system and it was changed to OH. So I want to know if me listing it as 0 for non residential tax will then make me owe tax to OH for that period of time

Yes. All your income is reportable and taxable on your Ohio return. You do not take a credit for the tax withheld by MA. Instead you file for a MA refund, as described above.

In addition, if you work in an OH city with an income tax, you may nave to file a city return for that city.  You normally only have to file a return in the city you live in. It is not necessary to file one in the city you work in, if different. Your employer will remit withholding to the city you work in, but you do not file a return unless you're claiming a refund or your employer didn't withhold enough ( this would be your situation). The city you live in will allow a credit or partial credit for the withheld tax you paid to the work location city.
