I tried to e-File with a direct debit payment to pay the taxes I owe. But TurboTax Premier is not accepting a date of 7/15/2020 (or anything past 4/15/2020) and will not allow you to continue. Will TurboTax be updating the software to allow this or do we have basically have to select pay by check but instead make a payment on the IRS website on 7/15/2020? It sure would be much easier to have a direct debit so we don't forget to make the payment in addition to worry that the site could get hacked.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
In order to take advantage of the extension of time to pay your taxes, you should select “I’ll mail a check” as your payment option when filing.
So Turbo Tax isn't going to update the program to reflect the new payment date?
No, not at this point. You will need to select " I'll mail a check" as your payment option.
Now that the filing date and the payment date are both 7/15/2020, will TurboTax be updating their software to do this? Seems like a very easy fix and would be very helpful to those who have not filed yet.
At this point we don't know.
An announcement will be made when we do know.
You have until July 15 to file your federal return and pay your income taxes this year since the tax filing deadline has been extended.
If you haven’t filed your federal taxes with TurboTax yet
Select Pay by check as your payment method and mail it in before July 15, 2020.
If you’ve already filed your federal taxes with TurboTax
You can’t change your payment date in TurboTax after your return has been accepted but you can cancel it and make other payment arrangements with the IRS.
Federal tax direct debit payments can be canceled up to 2 business days prior to the debit date. To cancel, call the IRS on (888) 353-4537, but please wait 7-10 days after your return has been accepted.
Then, to schedule a new payment, go to the IRS Direct Pay site.
