You cannot e-file a tax return for a past year. You have to print your 2023 tax return, sign it, and file it by mail.
E-filing for 2023 has been closed since the end of October 2024. Print, sign and mail your 2023 return.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
@katricepeeples366 We also need to ask----what software did you use to prepare the 2023 return you are attempting to e-file? The current online software can only be used for a 2024 return. If you used online for a 2023 return, that return is incorrect and should not be filed at all. A 2023 return must be prepared using the desktop download software on a full PC or Mac, and it must be filed by mail.
@katricepeeples366 OR is your 2024 return rejecting for the wrong AGI?
Try entering 0 for the AGI. The IRS might have processed your return later so the AGI didn't get entered in time. Especially if you mailed it. That works for most people. See,

If you can’t get it to efile you will have to print and mail it.

Be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them. You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places. Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.
