We cannot see your screen or your tax return.   Check all of the income you entered and pay special attention to the amounts you entered from boxes 16 and 17 of your W-2's.

Also----did you receive unemployment---MA taxes unemployment.

Why do i owe massachusetts $2215 this year vs. $77 refund last year?

The reason you would owe Massachusetts and last year received a refund is based on how much tax was withheld from your earnings.

Massachusetts tax was reduced from 5.05% to 5% in 2020. Click the link for the Tax Year 2020 Massachusetts Personal Income (Chapter 62) Changes.

To change state withholding being taken out from each paycheck, first, see how much state tax to expect. Then, file a new withholding form with your employer.

To check the federal withholding, check how much has been paid in so far for 2021 on your most recent paystub under YTD. To make changes, follow these steps for federal withholding:

  • If you have not filed 2020 yet, inside TurboTax, do a search for w4 and click the Jump to link. TurboTax will walk through everything you expect to make in 2021. If you want a refund next year, add extra money to be taken out throughout the year.
  • If you have already filed 2020, to avoid this from happening for 2021, use this W-4 Withholding Calculator which is set up for 2021 tax rates.
