You get the higher standard deduction if the person is 65 or older.......and it is automatically used based on the date of birth you enter in My Info. It goes by the person's age as of the end of 2022.
Your standard deduction lowers your taxable income. It is not a refund. You will see your standard or itemized deduction amount on line 12 of your 2022 Form 1040.
2022 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS
SINGLE $12,950 (65 or older + $1750)
MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $12,950 (65 or older + $1750)
MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $25,900 (65 or older + $1400 per spouse)
HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $19,400 (65 or older +$1750)
Legally Blind + $1750
If you are MFS, you are the only taxpayer. There is no second person. This does not apply to dependents.
Thank you. Very helpful
A better question is: Why are you filing as Married Filing Separately, rather than Married Filing Jointly, particularly at your age. If it's about the taxability of social security benefits, you're probably misunderstanding something.
