If you open the Form 5329-T, and type in a Waiver Statement, the Statement does get saved, but shows up with the Form 1099-R (the title Explanation Stm appears under the Form 1099-R). I just tried this with my Mac.
It can also be found again if you search for the 5329-T using Open Form at the top menu in Forms Mode. In the box labeled Waiver of Tax Smart Worksheet, click on Explanation to QuickZoom to the statement.
I am having the same problem with TurboTax Premier 2025 for Desktop. I have tried everything I can think of including the suggestions below and when the form comes up it shows no explanation. The explanation just disappears and I get the error message that I need to complete it when I do a review.
Hi Don, The reason TurboTax is not saving the waiver statement for me is because I missed taking a RMD for one of my accounts and do not have a 1099-R. I had to manually complete Form 5329-T, Part IX section without the waiver statement. If you have a 1099-R and need to complete form 5239-T for the underpayment additional tax, Turbo Tax will create form 5329-T during the walk through process. I am hoping next year Tech Support will add the question, "Did you miss taking a RMD last year" on the 1099-R main page and walk the taxpayer through the 5329-T process.
It sounds like you are trying to enter a statement to apply for a waiver of a penalty for not withdrawing the full amount of your RMD. If that's true:
My Deluxe software does not have form 5329 and it should because the sw allows and early withdrawal penalty!!! this is a software flaw.
The Premier version (includes Investments and Rental Property) of TurboTax includes Form 5329-T.
Are you saying that if you do a search of forms at the top of the screen that it does not come up with form 5329? Did you go to forms then search and then enter 5329?
Same problem with Turbo Tax home and Business Windows version. Will not accept any entry for explanation on form 5329-T. MS co-pilot suggests including a pdf attachment of explanation with tax return but I'm not sure that will work with e file submission. Anyone else having this problem?
The 2025 form 5239T Section IX Waiver of Tax Smart Worksheet, does not save the information entered. A representative found information that they are waiting for an updated from the IRS due the end of February. I have not seem this on the IRS website. In the desktop Premire version it does not say the form is not ready for ussed. What ARE THE REAL EXPECTATIONS FOR COMPLETION OF THIS FORM. When I review the return it takes me to this as an error needed to be corrected.
Can you expedite this.l
I am using Windows 2025 version of the software. I have filled out the required 1099-R information and the 5329-T Part XI as required for an incomplete RMD withdrawal. The "Waiver of Tax Smart Sheet" opens the "Explanation Statement" window with the appropriate information documenting a "Waiver Explanation". However, no text is kept in the explanation lined area. (This should be a standard expandable text box.) I found no other way in forms or Step by Step to enter this explanation.

I am having the same issue. I have tried so many times to get Form 5329T to save the waiver of tax smart worksheet. I type in the explanation and it just disappears! Does anyone have a fix for this?
Don't enter your Explanation Statement directly on Form 5329. Enter it in the interview and it will transfer to the 5329. EDIT your RMD entry, continue through the questions, and enter your explanation. The box allows an entry that scrolls out of the box area. You'll get a screen verifying you completed your waiver request.
Flip into FORMS and your explanation statement will show up.
@bondrml

yes. I figured it out. The form was not there. I called in and they added the form. Later I found that you go through the questions related to itemized deductions and the specific question regarding this form does bring up the form.
