Tax Return Rejected IND-508-01 & IND-510-02

Hi there,

I just e-filed my federal tax return. However, it was rejected right away with the following note:

IND-508-01 - The Primary SSN in the Return Header must not be the same as the Spouse SSN on another return for the same tax year with [filing status Married filing jointly] or [filing status Married filing separately with the Spouse exemption claimed].
IND-510-02 - The Spouse SSN in the return must not be the same as the Primary SSN on another return filed for the same tax year.

I'm sure none of us has filed tax return for 2019 and the SSN are correct. What would be the reason we got rejected?

Thank you!

More than likely you will have to print and mail the tax return since the IRS has determined that they have already received tax returns with the SS numbers that are on your tax return.

Tax Return Rejected IND-508-01 & IND-510-02

Thanks for the info.

In one of the threads it mentioned the stimulus payment application might cause this issue.  My wife did file a form 1040 as a non-filer to get the stimulus check. And my info was also entered as we filed jointly (probably I shouldn't have filed jointly since I'm not a non-filer). Would it be the reason we got IND-508-01 and IND-510-02 at the same time?

If that's the case, is there anything special we should include in the printed tax return documents?

Yes, your spouse and you filing for the stimulus on the non-filers website would cause this rejection.

In this case see this TurboTax support FAQ for how to proceed - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-topics/help/stimulus-how-to-file-your-return-after-getting-rej...

Tax Return Rejected IND-508-01 & IND-510-02

It would be nice if this info was easier to find and more clear on your software. Based on info found on turbotax I was afraid our identity was compromised or someone had used our ss# to file. First I spent much time pouring over our returns to make sure everything was entered correctly. It was so I spent more time trying to re-file only to have it rejected again. Then I spent more time trying to see what had happened. It was a lot of time wasted and energy spent when the explanation was clear and should have been available from the first error message. I'm disappointed in Turbotax.

I’m getting Access Denied when trying to click on the link provided for the solution. I’m having the same issue, how did you resolve this?

Tax Return Rejected IND-508-01 & IND-510-02

I have the same issue with TurboTax 2020, many rejects from IRS because the 2019 was not processed yet and I finally had to file by mail. Then, now, my tax return 2019 was just processed and done but my tax return 2020 is still in process. I tried to efile via TurboTax 2021, it was rejected with IND-031-04, then, I changed to AGI to zero for both, then, it rejected again with different code, "IND-510-02 - The Spouse SSN in the return must not be the same as the Primary SSN on another return filed for the same tax year." But I do not think the message is the correct message because we both filed for 30 years plus without any issue but since the 2019 Pandemic year and I did our SSN from the file return are correct and different. TurboTax seems to have some issue with the efile if there is no process of tax in the previous year. Hope they can fix and do not advise people to enter the zero for the AGI field of the previous year for the solution - that is not working for me.

If you have verified that the social security number is correct, you will want to mail in your return since the IRS has indicated that it has already been used. Please see this Help Article for a detailed explanation.
