Different states have different rules regarding Filing Status on their tax return.  For example, some states require you to use the same filing status that you used on your federal return.

Are you filing a joint federal return?

What is your State of Residence?

In which states do you each work?

Yes you can still file Joint but you would have to file two state tax returns if the State you are working in has State income tax.
