My 2018 E-file has been rejected twice apparently because the AGI does not match. I have taken the AGI directly from the 2017 mailed return. How can I find out why?

If you filed late last year there is a good chance that the 2017 AGI never was entered into the e-file database. Try using 0 (zero) for the AGI.

If you filed an amended return use the AGI on the first filed tax return.

If it continues to reject then the AGI in the IRS database might be in error. Mail filing is the only option.

If you filed 2017 late (like you are for 2018) then the AGI did not make it into the system. Try using zero.  If zero does not work then you have to print, sign and mail 2018.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS and/or your state received the return.

It is possible the IRS either has an incorrect 2017 AGI in their database for you or there is not an AGI from 2017 in their database.  Try entering a 0 (zero) for the 2017 AGI and e-file the return again.  If the return continues to be rejected for the AGI then print and mail the return.

No one can access your return to get your 2017 AGI for you.  Only you can access your return.

Note:  Every year, before mid-October, print a copy of your current year tax return and save it as a tax file and pdf, too.  That way you will have it when you need it for school, a loan, next year’s tax return, etc. without going through a lot of aggravation (and expense)  to get it.

Your 2017 tax return shows your 2017 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) If you filed a joint return then the AGI is the same for each of you.

Form 1040EZ    line 4

Form 1040A       line 21

Form 1040        line 37

If you are using the same TT account that you used last year, you should also be able to find this number in your Tax Timeline for 2017
