IRS took part of my refund towards last year's State fees due. I have not received the balance. How do I check on all of this?

The IRS does not offset your federal tax refund for state fees. That is done by your state department of revenue using your state tax refund. You would need to contact your state department for assistance. See this help article here on how to do so.

For federal offsets, you should soon receive a letter from the government explaining why you didn't get the entire refund.

If you don’t get a notice, you’ll need to call:

  • Bureau of Fiscal Services at 800-304-3107
  • TDD at 866-297-0517

You can also contact the IRS for further assistance regarding this matter. Their phone number is 800-829-1040.
