when you work as an independent contractor (no W-2 no withholding by the guy) you have a business. see if there is a box to skip the name since it's not required. if TT won't let you skip just enter your name.
Sounds like you got a 1099Misc or got paid cash? You need to pay FICA (Social Security and Medicare) Tax since he didn't take it out of your pay.
If you got wages and you are an employee you would get a W2.
Yes you are the owner of your own self employment business. You are in business for yourself. Use your own info. The people or company that pays you is your customer or client. You need to fill out schedule C for self employment business income. You are considered to have your own business for it. YOU are the business.
You need to report all your income even if you don't get a 1099Misc. You use your own records. You are considered self employed and have to fill out a schedule C for business income. You use your own name, address and ssn or business name and EIN if you have one. You should say you use the Cash Accounting Method and all income is At Risk.
After it asks if you received any 1099Misc it will ask if you had any income not reported on a 1099Misc. You should be keeping your own records. Just go through the interview and answer the questions. Then you will enter your expenses.

You can enter Self Employment Income into Online Deluxe or Premier but if you have any expenses you will have to upgrade to the Self Employed version. How to enter self employment income
Or There is also The Turbo Tax Free File program which is free for federal and state. And has more forms than the Federal Free Edition, like Schedules A, B, C , D, E, F, EIC, H, K-1, SE, etc.
To qualify for the Free File website you just need to meet one of these 3 things.
AGI $36,000 or less.
Active duty military with AGI of $69,000 or less
OR qualify for EIC (earned income credit.)
In order to use the Free File program, you have to start it at a special website. Try signing in at the top right.
