I've always bought and downloaded each year's software off of CD. I recently bought a new MacBook and no CD drive. What is best practice to view prior year returns?

You only need the prior year .tax2018 file to transfer into the current year. And actually you should open each year (if you still have the programs installed) and save each year as a pdf file if you haven't done that. Then you don't need the program installed to view your returns.   You can save the pdf 2 ways, just the forms for filing and a pdf with all the worksheets.  Then copy the pdf files to a flash drive to move to the new computer.  You should also copy the .tax data files in case you ever need to amend a year.  But you would have to call in and ask for the program downloads for the prior years.  And they only support the last 3 years, so only back to 2016.

This year starting with 2019 you get a License Code to activate the program.  Which will also let you download the program if you buy the CD.
