I live in NJ and work in NY. Do I need to file in NY?

Like many people that work in NYC, I live in New Jersey and work in NYC. Do I need to file in both NJ and NY? TurboTax software is telling me that it doesn't think I need to file in NY. Want to make sure.

Hey  there!

You'd file in both states: a resident return for New Jersey plus a nonresident return for New York.

New York collects taxes on income you earned while working there. And New Jersey requires that you report all of your income (including that earned in New York), but will credit the New York taxes so you don't get double-taxed.

Make sure you prepare your New York return first, so we can properly credit the taxes on your New Jersey return.

I hope this helps!

I am preparing my 2018 taxes and when i do NY it is using both of our income not just my wife who is the one working in NY.  Why is it doing it that way?  Thanks.

did you fill out / respond to TT correctly? Click the 'state taxes' tab and answer the questions there.

NJ should give you credit for what you pay to NY - look closely at the NJ return once you've completed

(I am not familiar with NY taxes, but does it have to do with filing jointly????)
