If your father passed away in 2021 or earlier, your mother should start over from scratch with a new TurboTax Online account for herself. She should not try to use your father's account.

If he passed away in 2022 or 2023, and your mother did not remarry in 2022, she can still file as married filing jointly for 2022. She should use your father's existing TurboTax Online account. In the Your Info section, check the box that says your father passed away before filing this return, and enter the date of death.

Did your father pass in 2022?  If so, most likely your mother should use the same account and file the same way as she did in 2021, which I assume was Married Filing Jointly.

She will indicate that the primary Taxpayer has passed when completing the "Personal Information" section.

Keep the names in the same order as last year since the IRS will pick up the Social Security Number of the first Taxpayer listed when you enter your PIN or AGI from 2021 in submit the return.

Your Mother always has the option of filing Separately, but it is usually not advantageous to do so.

You can save the tax file and upload it into a new account for Tax Year 2023 or she can continue to use the same account.

If her husband passed in 2022, she will no longer file as Married Filing Jointly starting in Tax Year 2023 which she will file next year in 2024.

TurboTax Online is not a subscription, but some information will flow year to year when you use the same account.

If you are not able to access the online account your father was using, your mother may need to set-up a new account.

Here is a link for accessing forgotten passwords for TurboTax Online.

If your father passed previously to 2022, please continue the question thread and provide us with more details.

We are sorry to hear of your loss,
