My printed 1040 form shows a figure of $6021 on line 36 which is not correct because I owe a federal tax of $5741. However I can't change line 36 to zero using the software with the "Apply Refund to Next Year" form because the software shows that I don't have a refund. How can I change the $6021 on line 36 of form 1040 to zero?

Let's start at the top.
If you didn't have a refund on line 34. You should have an amount you owe on line 37.
If the question is asked "Apply Refund to Next Year" you should leave it blank, or enter "0".
To change the amount of federal refund applied to next year:
Applying your refund to next year will reduce your current refund and give you a credit for tax paid on next year's return.
This can reduce or eliminate the amount of quarterly payments for taxpayers who pay estimated taxes.
