Amended State Tax Refund

In early 2018 I rec'd an amended 2016 1099 from Fidelity Investments regarding an error in how a distribution was recorded. I subsequently filed an amended 2016 return and rec'd a refund from the IRS for $14.00 and from  Maryland for $12.00. Do I need to show this refund on my 2018 return and, if so, where do I list it? Misc income? Thanks

Amended State Tax Refund

A federal tax refund is not entered on a federal tax return.

The state tax refund would be entered on a federal tax return if for the tax year received you had itemized your deductions and the state income taxes were used as an itemized deduction.

To enter a state or local tax refund (Form 1099-G) -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Scroll down to Other Common Income
On State and Local Tax Refunds on Form 1099-G, click the start or update button

Or enter state refunds in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to state refunds

You can no longer file 2017 online as that year is closed for electronic filing. Please click here to download the 2017 tax year on your computer. You will have to print and mail your tax return at this point.

Where do you enter the federal tax refund so that the State tax can pick up the additional income?

Amended State Tax Refund

If you are asking where to report your federal refund on your state return, the answer is your federal refund is not taxable income on your state return. You do not need to report it.

If you are asking where to report your state refund on your federal return, please follow these steps:

  1. Log into TurboTax and click on any topic to continue
  2. Click on Federal from the menu on the left-hand side
  3. Click on Wages & Income at the top
  4. Scroll down to "Other Common Income" and click on "Show More"
  5. Click on "Start" to the right of "Refunds Received for State/Local Tax Returns" and answer the questions.

Your 2018 state or local refund may be taxable income in 2019 if all of the following apply:

  • You itemized your deductions in 2018
  • You claimed state and local taxes paid as part of your itemized deductions in 2018
  • Claiming a deduction for state and local taxes increased your federal refund (or reduced your federal taxes)
