Hello,
The 2024 tax year will be my final year filing Form 5471, as I will become a Non-Resident Alien (NRA) for U.S. tax purposes beginning in 2025. While the foreign corporation will continue to operate, I will no longer have a U.S. filing obligation related to it due to my change in tax residency status.
In this case, should I check box D on Form 5471 ("Check box if this is a final Form 5471 for the foreign corporation")? Or is that box only intended to be checked if the foreign corporation itself ceases to exist or the U.S. person no longer owns shares, regardless of changes in filing status?
I want to ensure the form is completed correctly and that there is no confusion about my future filing obligations.
Any clarification you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
