Dear All- I got a notice from California State Tax of unpaid taxes with penalties. This is due to a unfiled 2018 tax return which I can only file now due to personal reasons. Given I have paid this amount, how should I include this state tax paid in my to be filed 2018 tax return. Where should I enter this information as I file this return? Both on Federal returns as well as the CA state returns?
Thanks a lot

If you already paid the 2018 state taxes owed, then all you need to do is complete the state tax return, sign, date and mail the return to the state. There is no where to enter 2018 state taxes owed and paid on the 2018 tax return. The state has already received the payment.
There is nothing you need to add to the 2018 federal tax return for payment of state taxes since you did not pay those taxes in 2018.
On your federal tax return for tax year 2022 that you file next year you can enter the state taxes paid in 2022 as an itemized deduction on Schedule A of the 2022 federal return.
@DoninGA- thank you for the clarification. So, CA Tax authority sent me a past due tax notice for ~ $800 because they didn't have a return on file. When I am filing the return now, the tax due is $1400. Should I only send them a remaining amount of $600? If yes, where do I state on the form that I have paid $800 for the 2018 taxes already , but in 2022. I don't want to send them a check for $1400 when I already paid $800 in 2022. that's my confusion and seems like for the Federal taxes, as you rightly said, nothing needs to be done for the 2018 return, but modify on the 2022 return.
Just send them $600 when you file the 2018 tax return since you have already paid $800 of the $1,400 owed. There is nowhere on the form to indicate that you already paid part of the $1,400 owed.
$800? Do you have a business? That sounds like for form 568 for CA LLC. Since they wouldn't know how much you owe on your personal 540 return.
