As the title states, I was claimed. When completing my taxes I simply used all the previous information.
I still had the same job and paid rent to live with my parents. (I paid for all expenses, such as food, gas, insurance, etc)
When filing those taxes, the first question is "can someone claim you." By default I said yes and moved on, now that has caused me to miss out on the $1,200 and the upcoming one in 2021 for $2,000.
What do I have to do in order to receive both of these stimulus packages in 2021?

forget about what you did for 2019.
It is your 2020 return that controls.
You must not be a dependent of another taxpayer .
Make sure your parents understand this.
Some tax software allows mistakes to go through and they may not be paying attention.
@Sinan96 - just complete your 2020 tax return. Currently, the tax forms are set up to reconcile for the 1st stimulus and it will appear on Line 30 of Form 1040. It's not clear yet how the 2nd stimulus will be handled on the tax forms... suggest not being in a rush to file until how the 2nd stimulus will be paid is sorted out.
Since the second one will come in 2021, I doubt IRS will do any changes now that would affect current tax year.
Don't file in a hurry until they put out info on how the second stimulus check will be handled ... it could be on the 2020 return like the first stimulus check. Watch the news and check the IRS website.
Just read this ... so wait and see what happens :
Although it appears the landscape keeps shifting with regards to the amount of stimulus each qualifying individual will receive, one thing’s for certain, something has to be in the post by 15 January.
Included in the $900bn bipartisan bill, that was approved by Congress and signed into law by president Trump, is a deadline of 15 January 2021 by which time the IRS and US Treasury must stop sending checks as part of this round of delivery.
If you don't receive your full second stimulus check by 15 January, you will need to claim all or part of the missing amount when you file your federal tax returns in 2021. You will also be able to claim any money the IRS still owes you from the first round of payments sent out earlier in 2020.
