Thanks for your response. Yes, it was on a 1099-misc. I spent an hour on the phone with a tax expert and we eventually figured it out.
When you enter the Form 1099-MISC, you need to indicate that the income was not associated with your main job, you did not have a profit motive for it and it was only received in the current year. Then it will not be treated as self-employment income.
It wasn't only received in the current year. That was the problem. Feel free to stop responding as I am done. You didn't fix the problem.
