Paid all my 2017 state taxes in 2018, no extension. What should I enter on the federal?

Use the following steps to go to the section of the tax return to enter the state balance due that you paid in 2018 for your 2017 tax return: 

  • Using the CD/downloaded version of TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner and type state balance due paid” then click Find

  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to state balance due paid

  • Click on the blue “Jump to state balance due paid” link

  • Scroll to the bottom of the screen until you see Other Income Taxes Paid in 2018

  • Click Start or Update beside Balance due on your 2017 state taxes paid in 2018
