Ordained Clergy, Quarterly Estimated Tax Payments for SS and Medicare taxes, any refund of any of that amount?

I am an ordained clergyman working at a church in a ministerial job. I paid over $3000 in Estimated Quarterly SE tax payments for Social Security and Medicare taxes. I only work part-time and my yearly salary is only a little over $20,000. Am I entitled to a refund for any part of those quarterly estimated tax payments

There are many factors that are involved to determine the outcome of your return.  TurboTax Deluxe will allow you to check the results any time and as many times as you want.

When you enter your return in TurboTax be sure to add your estimated tax payments.  Once you have all of your income entered and the estimated tax payments you can preview your 1040 at any time to see the results.  TurboTax gives you information along the way as well.

You should be able to do this by using the following instructions.

If you are using TurboTax Online (please see screenshots attached):

  1. Click on My Account in the blue bar at the top
  2. Click on Tools
  3. Click on Topic Search
  4. Search for estimated and then click on Go on estimated tax payments
  5. Follow the prompts

Note : If you don't have a My Account, try maximizing your window and/or zooming out your browser.  If you are on a mobile device, you will not have access to My Account or Tools.  The instructions below for TurboTax Desktop should offer you close guidance.  If you need more assistance, please comment below.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop (CD/Download product)

1. Click on Federal Taxes (Personal if using Home & Business)

2. Click on Deductions & Credits (you may need to click Continue)

3. Select I'll choose what I work on

4. Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

5. Click on Start/Update next to Estimates

6. Scroll down to Estimated Tax Payments

7. Follow the prompts to enter these taxes paid along with the date paid.

Next you can preview your 1040 to see if any of it is taxable on your return.

  1. Select My Account in the upper right
  2. Select  Tools
  3. Select View Tax Summary
  4. Select Preview My 1040 (image attached)

Enter your estimated payments under "Estimates and other taxes paid" on the Deductions page.  They count against your tax owed, and if you paid more than you owed, you will get a refund.
