One of the TurboTax pages asked for the beginning mortgage principal. It pulled up a form, whose name I can't remember, where I had to type in this number.

I refinanced my mortgage last year if that's helpful.

One of the TurboTax pages asked for the beginning mortgage principal. It pulled up a form, whose name I can't remember, where I had to type in this number.

Because you refinanced last year you would have entered your beginning mortgage principal in Box 2 on TurboTax where it says outstanding mortgage principal.  That information will be carried to the Home Mortgage Interest Worksheet.

Your outstanding mortgage principal balance is the amount of money you still owe on your home loan.

If you took out the loan in 2020, please input your original loan balance. If your loan was funded before 2020, please input your balance as of January 1, 2020.

To get to that screen follow these steps:

  • Federal
  • Deductions and Credits
  • Your Home
  • Mortgage Interest and Refinancing (Form 1098) - revisit
  • Edit the entry and go through the screens to get to the screen
  • Let's get the details from your _____ 1098
