What do you mean by which? If he had any sort of pension plan, 401k etc. through work, this is just indicating this fact.

If the box for retirement plan is checked on a W-2, you do not need to know what kind it is.  You would not make any further entries for this on your return and the retirement contributions credit is calculated automatically by the program.  You would only need to to make additional entries for that credit if you contributed outside the W-2 plan.
