NJ Exemptions for dependents attending college

When using Turbo Tax Premier online and filling up NJ state return, Turbo tax seems to be incorrectly adding an additional $1000 for dependents attending college.  For college going dependents, this exemption per child can be availed if their age is <22 per NJ state 1040 instructions.  In my case, turbo tax for NJ included $1000 as exemption for my 24 year child, which seems to be inaccurate.  Can someone from Turbo Tax team very the business rules for NJ state filing to ensure that the such currently is inaccurate, and confirm back, and fix the software please.    If my assessment is incorrect, let me know.  Thank you.

It works correctly when I try it. Are you seeing the $1,000 exemption on Form NJ-1040 line 12? Look at the actual tax form, not a summary screen in TurboTax. Check the birth date that you entered for the child. Is the year 2003 or earlier?

I am seeing an excess of $1000 under the excemption amount in TurboTax online under the heading "Your New Jersey Bottom Line (NJ1040)" under personal excemptions.   I have not filed yet, so cannot see the form NJ 1040.  My daughter is born prior to 2003.   I would assume once I file for NJ, system will use this amount in line 12 of NJ 1040, which is not correct for the scenario I mentioned that the college going child is born prior tp 2003.

Look at the actual tax form, not a summary screen in TurboTax. Don't make assumptions about what TurboTax is going to do. Go to the following link for instructions to see your tax return before you file.

How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing?

I understand that your daughter was born before 2003. But her actual year of birth is not the issue. Please check the birth date that is entered in TurboTax. An error in the entry could make TurboTax think she is younger. Her birth date is entered in the My Info section.

Birth year entered is correct and prior to 2003.   TT online premium does not allow to preview the return without paying first, so I cannot preview unless I pay.

BTW - Not sure if this makes a difference. I have two children as college going dependents.  One qualifies for the $1000 exemption (with age <22) and the other one is >24 (so per NJ 1040 rules, she does not qualify).   Like I mentioned, TT for NJ state is counting both children for college dependency per the "NJ Bottom Line" summary.   I cannot preview the tax return unless I pay.

Did you or your spouse turn 65 in 2025?

There is an additional $1,000 senior deduction.

No we are under 65.

The point is that Turbo Tax online Premier for state filing for NJ is showing me additional $1000 exception which per my situation is not applicable per NJ 1040.  This has never happened earlier.  For this year, I have decided to not use TT for NJ state filing . Thank you for your time in looking into this matter.
