Newlyweds with income from 1 state - one spouse lived part time in two states

A couple was married in 2025.

  • Spouse 1 had income in Missouri and lived all year in Missouri.
  • Spouse 2 has income only from Missouri but lived part year in Illinois and then Missouri after the marriage.

I'm using the desktop version (Windows) of TurboTax Deluxe.

  • How should they file their federal return? Married filing Jointly?
  • What state returns need to be completed?  What status should they file state returns?  If multiple states, which order should they be prepared?

Newlyweds with income from 1 state - one spouse lived part time in two states

If spouse 2 lived in IL but had no income in IL then there is no reason to file an IL tax return.   You can file joint returns for your federal and MO returns.
