Please ensure that all box 14 entries of your W-2 are filled in with the categories selected. Once you select the appropriate box 14 categories, your W-2 should pass review.
If the categories for a particular deduction in Box 14 is not listed as an option, then you can select the category labeled Other - not classified.
Generally, the Box 14 items of your W-2 are for informational purposes and would not affect your income tax return.
There is nothing in Box 14 of the W-2 in question and so I just left the TurboTax fields blank. I just tried selecting the Other category and leaving both the Description and Amount fields blank but this didn't "fix" the Needs Review problem. Any other ideas? Thanks.
If you are still getting an error, it would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2021" file that is experiencing this issue.
You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions: Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.
We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.
Lena,
I appreciate your offer and may take you up on it. However, there really isn't anything more to "see" other than what I described. The W-2 was entered twice, once manually and once via image upload. All available fields were entered into TurboTax as they appear on the W-2. I had a similar issue with another entry and corrected it by deleting and re-entering - but that didn't work for the W-2 In question. This is apparently an issues that others have raised and it really shouldn't take a tax expert like yourself to figure out what seems like a clear "glitch" in the TurboTax tool!
I'm going to explore a bit further and may come back to you if I can't figure it out.
Best,
The problem seems to be that the W-2 did not include an Employer State ID number along with the State, Wages and State Tax information. I assumed that this was another field that could be left blank but must be provided. Apparently, I may need to request a corrected W-2 that includes this missing ID.
If there is no State ID number, you may request a corrected ID, but in most cases, the State ID is the same number as the Federal EIN.
By any chance did you work for the same employer in 2020. You could always check your 2020 tax papers to see if that W-2 had a state ID number on it. If it is the same employer it would be the same ID number.
Or you could simply enter the Federal EIN in the box for the State ID number.
Thanks, Jill. I did enter the Federal EIN for the State ID and the "needs review" button changed to "edit". It seemed odd to me that the State ID field in the W-2 didn't automatically populate with the Federal EIN if it was the same as the State ID so I reached out to the employer for confirmation or a corrected W-2. Strange the hoops we have to jump through for tax filing to tell the government what they already know😒
