Well, then you should wait until you have it to prepare a tax return claiming him as a dependent.You need his SSN to enter him on your return. The seems rather long to obtain a SSN for him. Have you contacted the Social Security office to see why?

You need to contact SSA. You should have had it within weeks of filing the paperwork with Social Security. Could they have sent it to an old address or something?
