My wife no longer works as self employed. She did not work at all in 2016. What do I need to in occupation?
She had back surgery in Dec. 2015

Anything you want. The IRS doesn't care. Just put RETIRED if you like. I am also assuming that when the 2015 taxes were file, the sale, closure or other disposition of the business was reported on that return. If it wasn't, then the IRS is expecting a SCH C from you this year. If they don't get one, you'll be hearing from the IRS 24-36 months after you file the 2016 tax return without the SCH C.
But again, if you did report the sale, closure or other disposition of the business on the 2015 tax return, then you're all set and nothing to worry about.

Since your wife no longer works as self employed and did not work at all in 2016 she can put unemployed as the occupation.
