My wife and I live together and are filing separately. I will claim our son on my taxes. Do we need to file Form 8332, or is that only for divorce/separated couples?

Form 8332 is for couples who are divorced, separated, or never married, and live apart. You do not use it if you live together.

How does the IRS know we live together, and that we don't need the form?  Will this trigger an audit?

If you both file as married filing separately with the same address, they know you live together.

The child can only be on one tax return and not on the other at all.
