my turbo tax return was completed but i did not mail it. can i make some adjustments and have it filed online?  The program won't let me go back and acts as I have filed.  i did not mail it so it didn't get filed.

If you haven't filed at all--haven't efiled and haven't printed and physically mailed it--here's how to open the return interview back up to continue working on it:

  • Log into your account, and at the Tax Home or in the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents" for 2020, look for a link "Add a State."
  • Click on "Add a State."  (That doesn't really add one; that's just to open the return.)
  • Once the return is open, you can make any changes in your return you need to, if it has not been filed.
  • Then go through the REVIEW section to be sure everything is still in order.
  • Then go to the FILE section and choose a filing method, etc.

"can i make some adjustment and have it filed online?"

If you want to change the filing method and efile the return, then after you go through the Review mentioned above, then go to the FILE section and select to efile the return.

Then continue answering screens all the way to the very end, and click an orange button that says "Transmit returns now."

This FAQ may also have some info that will help:

ADDENDUM:

See the info I left you above.   However, I don't know what all you are doing.   You may confuse the issue by having 2 threads.   I just saw you have another thread where you said  you have $400 in self-employment income.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/after-you-file/discussion/i-earned-400-doing-odd-jobs-in-2020-and-...

If you are using the regular Free Edition, it will ask you to upgrade to at least Deluxe (a paid version) to report self-employment income.   If there are any self-employment expenses, it would require Self-Employed Edition, which is quite a bit more expensive.

Here's another option, assuming you have never filed the original 2020 return.   You may be able to switch to the other more-powerful free product.

TurboTax also has another free product (TurboTax IRS Free File Program) that is fully-featured and can prepare all the usual forms and schedules.   It can handle Self-Employment income for free.   It is even more powerful than Deluxe, if you qualify.  For example, in addition to Schedules 1-3 it can prepare Schedule C, D, E, F, etc., and enter K-1. But one has to meet one of the qualifications to use.  See below:

To qualify for free 2020 federal and state tax returns through the IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax, you just need to meet one of these requirements:

  • Your 2020 AGI is $39,000 or less (if filing jointly MFJ, this figure is for the AGI of both spouses combined.)  ; or
  • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
  • In 2020, you served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum AGI of $72,000, and you have a military-issued W-2.

If you meet one of those qualifications and want to use it, it is at this special website

https://freefile.intuit.com/

but see these 2 FAQs first, including how to switch without starting over:

]One more thing:

If you do try to switch to TurboTax IRS Free File Program, it may not let you if the program currently thinks you already filed by mail.

If that happens, you can try opening the original return interview (steps in the first answer above) and changing the filing method to efile, but then do not continue to actually efile.   Then the program would think you had not filed.  Then it might let you switch to the TurboTax IRS Free File Program.  I don't know if that would work, but that's how I would approach it.
