A 2018 return can only be completed using desktop software downloaded or installed to a full PC or Mac.  The online program closed in October of 2019.  If you started a 2018 return using online last year you can still get to it in your account but you will have to complete it using the CD/download.  Then it has to be printed, signed and mailed.

Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2018 returns is now permanently closed.  You had until midnight on Tuesday, October 15 to finish and attempt to e-file; if your e-file was rejected you had until October 20 to make corrections and re-file. Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2018 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.

If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.

They are available from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time Monday-Friday.

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

If you mean you were using desktop last year, and your computer crashed, sorry--the tax file was only on your own hard drive.  It is not online.  So if that is the case, you have to start over.  Did you buy the software from TurboTax?  If so, you can download it again to start over using your new computer.

Were you using the Desktop program installed on the laptop?  You need the file ending in .tax2018 from that computer to open in the program. It is only saved and stored on that computer and any backups you made.  If you can't find the .tax file you will have to start over.

Were you able to install the 2018 program on the new computer from the CD or download?

If you can access the hard drive on the old computer, the file you need is in the documents\turbotax directory and has a filename extension of .tax2018. You need to copy that file to the same location on the new computer. Otherwise, if you can't access the hard drive on the old computer, you have no choice but to start over from scratch.
