My tax return was rejected but I don't know why. I'm not paying $80 for TurboTax desktop. Why was my original return, which I paid for, rejected?

You received an email telling you that your return was rejected, and it had a rejection code or rejection message.  No one else can see that email so we do not know why your return was rejected.  The most common reason for rejection is incorrect AGI.  Another common reason is the use a Social Security number that has already been used on a return filed by someone else.  If that is why it was rejected, it no longer matters because you only need your AGI in order to e-file.  You cannot e-file now.

Your 2018 return has to be printed, signed and mailed.  E-filing is permanently closed for 2018 returns.

Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2018 returns is now permanently closed.  You had until midnight on Tuesday, October 15 to finish and attempt to e-file; if your e-file was rejected you had until October 20 to make corrections and re-file. Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2018 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device).

If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.

They are available from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time Monday-Friday.

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

When you complete your 2018 return, it has to be filed by mail.  When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS and/or your state received the return.

And---you have to pay for the software whether you e-file or mail the return.  There is no extra fee to e-file.  Since you have paid for the software you can get the download if needed by contacting customer support.

If you were using the online free version and the AGI was the issue then you can download the PDF of the return for free ... print & mail it.
