My tax return keeps getting rejected for incorrect AGI value, even though I'm putting the correct AGI number from last year's tax return (2023). The reason given is "Reject Code IND-031-04 - Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)".

Last year, I filed an extension, and then I filed my tax return late last year. I had to mail in a hard copy. However a couple months later I received a letter in the mail from the IRS, saying that I owed additional taxes.

What can/should I do!?

If you entered the correct 2023 AGI from your 2023 federal tax return, Form 1040 Line 11 and the IRS rejects the return for the AGI, then there is a good possibility the IRS does not have the 2023 AGI for your Social Security number in their database.

Enter a 0 (zero) for the 2023 AGI and e-file the 2024 tax return again.

Sometimes the AGI changes due to IRS corrections and does not match your return information.  The easiest way to get the right AGI is to log into IRS.gov, create a secure password, then download their official record of last years return.  You will find two AGI numbers, AGI and AGI by the computer.  IF they do not match, use the AGI by the computer.

Actually, I looked at the record in IRS.gov and it matched the one on the form I filed. I tried using 0 as the other user suggested. That actually worked.

Thank you all for the help.

The IRS uses your prior year AGI to combat fraud.

You can find your 2023 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) by:

  • Looking at line 11 on page 1 of your 2023 Form 1040
  • Requesting a transcript of your 2023 tax return from the IRS. You can request your transcript online at the following link: Get Transcript

Check these items as well to ensure you have the correct number.  If you:

  • Filed late last year after mid-November or your return was processed after that time—try entering 0
  • Amended your return last year—make sure you’re using the AGI from your original return, not the amended one. (If you only have a 1040X form, it’s on line 1, column A).
  • Rounded your AGI to the nearest dollar—be sure to round up when it’s 50 cents or more and down when it’s 49 cents or less.
  • Filed with your spouse last year—you and your spouse have the same 2023 AGI. (Don’t split the AGI amount or enter  0  for one of you).

Time-saving Tip: If what you entered is correct and you continue to get a reject, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return.

I am having the same issue now. Turbotax sometime filed the wrong tax return. One year I had a refund for the penalty I paid accordingly to Trubotax; another year I got refund for over calculated the tax I should pay.

I followed the suggestion from another contributor. I enter $0 for the prior year AGI and I was able to efile.

Entering 0 still did not work for me :(  Not sure what to do now other than mail the return!  Any suggestions?

What approach worked for you? Entering $0 or something else?

I tried again and I made sure to set both mine and my spouse's AGI to 0 and it was accepted. Thanks

I'm experiencing same problem. Been filing with Turbo Tax for decades. Never had this problem before. Asks me for my last years AGI (pre-fills it for me), then asks me for my spouse's AGI (and pre-fills the same number - we are MFJ) so I accept it. Submit the return (4/12/25) with my payment and assume everything is OK. No rejection notice from Turbotax. I did get an email from the IRS on 4/14/25 headed "Notification from the IRS" but was actually worried it was phishing so didn't click on the link. On 4/18/25 receive a letter in the mail saying my return was rejected. Do some research and find out I need to enter "0" in my spouse's AGI. It seems it may have accepted that. Probably going to get a late filing and paying penalty from the IRS and I'm pretty annoyed.
