My tax return got rejected for lack of IP Pin. I fixed it and have tried reapplying my return five times. What should I do next?

what did you do - you need your latest PIN for 2025 filing from irs.gov (in case you used an old one from last year or that was originally mailed to you), and enter it under the Other Tax Situations section.

(I thought from last year that these rejects count towards your 5 e-file limit but someone from Intuit said here on another topic that they don't, not sure what will happen if you try a 6th time).

You need to get a new each year, make sure that you are using the PIN that was assigned to you for this year.  The IRS mails a CP01A letter every year. If you do not have it you can:

  • Retrieve your IP PIN online at the IRS's Get an IP PIN site, or
  • Call the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 to have your IP PIN mailed to you (this can take up to 21 days)

Once you get your PIN enter it in your return and file the return and efile it again.

  1. Go to the Was anyone on this return assigned an Identity Protection PIN? screen under Other Tax Situations, and select Yes.
  2. On the Add any Identity Protection PINs screen, select Add or Edit next to the spouse's name.
  3. On the Add/Edit IP PIN screen, enter or correct the IP PIN, and select Continue.
  4. On the Add any Identity Protection PINs screen, select Continue.
  5. Select File in the menu.
  6. On the Well done! screen, select Continue.
  7. Don't select Fix my return.
  8. Select Start next to Step 3 to refile your return.

If you don't want to request the IP PIN you can file your return by mail.  To print it, follow the steps below:

  1. Select File in the left menu.
  2. At the Welcome back screen, select Continue.
  3. Next to Step 3 Get ready to save and file your returns, select Start.
  4. Select File by mail and follow the instructions to print and mail your return.

How do I get my 6-digit IP PIN?
