I would never recommend that you wait beyond the filing deadline (April 18, 2017) to file your federal income tax return. Late filing and payment can incur significant penalties and interest if you have taxes due.

Offsets of income tax refunds for payment of defaulted student loans or other debts to the government are managed by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service's Treasury Offset Program (TOP).

If you have questions about the offset (reduction) of your federal tax refund or offset of another U.S. government-issued payment, you can call the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) Call Center to obtain agency contact information:

Call toll free: 1 (800) 304-3107

Hearing impaired customers may use the Federal Relay Service by dialing 800-877-8339 to reach a Communications Assistant (CA) who will dial the toll free number.
