MY STATE REFUND WAS LESS THAN I EXPECTED
The state will send you a letter explaining the change. TurboTax does not get any feedback from your state after your return is accepted, so no one at TT knows why your state refund was less. Did you owe back taxes, child support, or student loans? Traffic fines, etc.?
I do no owe any fines for back taxes. I was assuming they would send me an explanation letter. I guess I was wondering if turbo tax guarantees their work. They “checked” my taxes and everything was good. So since the amount changed do they stand by the original amount or no?
It takes a few weeks for the letter to arrive when they change your refund. The state will send you an explanation. Wait for that letter.
ACCURACY GUARANTEE
TurboTax provides do-it-yourself tax software. TurboTax guarantees the calculations done by its software. The information entered into that software is data entered by you, the user. TurboTax cannot and does not check that information against any outside sources, so TT cannot know if you entered your information completely or correctly. It is up to you to enter all of your information correctly and completely, and to check your tax return before you file it. If you forget to enter some income, or enter it incorrectly, enter it in the wrong place, etc. then you may end up owing additional tax to the IRS and/or state. TurboTax does not pay the additional tax you owe. If TurboTax’s calculations were incorrect, and you owe penalties and/or interest, then TT will pay the penalties and interest. The tax due is always owed by you, and must be paid by you.
If you need to enter a claim for the accuracy guarantee:
First look at your saved PDF copy of your state return to see what your refund was filed to be. You can also find this on the 'Filing Instructions' page for your state return. Then you need to figure out what accounts for the difference.
Check your order confirmation email or log in to your account and review your payment history to see what your TurboTax fees were. If you paid these with your Refund, this lowers your Refund. However, for $1,000 it sounds like a state offset, and TurboTax would not know about this. If so, you would be notified by a letter. You may find the info on your State Website.
I did upload my W2 would that change anything?
If you imported your W-2 in TurboTax, that information should be double checked to make sure that it is accurate before submitting your return for e-file. The letter from the IRS or state department of revenue will explain why the amoutn you received is lowered.
Thank you all for your help. I’ll be anxiously awaiting my letter.
