My son who is in college filed taxes for when he worked in the summer and he was getting back state taxes but when he put that i claim him on my taxes too.

Because two people can't claim the same exemption, so if he can be claimed as a dependent on your return, he can't claim himself. This would cause his taxes to go up and his refund to go down.
