My son was born in 2020 and claimed on my '21 taxes. I didn't receive any advanced child tax payments and thought I would receive the full $3,600 but only get $500. Why?

Ok ... #1 error for new parents who are sleep deprived ...  go back and edit the child and read this screen and answer YES , YES and then NO ...

You may have answered something incorrectly on your 2020 return if all you got was the $500 credit for other dependents on your 2020 return for a child born in 2020.   You can amend 2020 to get the child-related credits you missed out on.

You say he was born in 2020?  On your 2020 return ---which you filed in 2021-----you should have said the child lived with you the whole year.  And you had to enter a Social Security number for the child.

Check what you said in My Info for 2021:

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number. If your child was born in 2021make sure you said he lived with you the whole year.  There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support.  Say NO to that question.

If you did not get the advance CTC payments last year you can still get the full amount on your 2021 return.  It will show up on line 28 of your Form 1040.
